Andreea, 2020

Oil on Canvas

This evocative artwork encapsulates the tragic narrative of Andreea Celea, whose life was brutally cut short by the hands of her former partner, Gabriel Villanueva, on the harrowing night of September 1st, 2018. Gabriel fled from the clutches of justice, callously abandoning his faithful dog at their shared hotel, while Andreea lay in torment on the cold floor below, her body wracked with pain after being forcibly pushed from the 8th-floor balcony. Despite the overwhelming evidence, Gabriel remained obstinate, refusing to acknowledge his heinous deeds. Eventually, justice prevailed, as he was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to two decades behind bars, following years of arduous legal battles to secure justice for Andreea. This poignant work of art not only commemorates Andreea's memory but also serves as a powerful tribute to all victims of gender-based violence, echoing her fervent desire to be immortalized through art. The painting portrays Andreea reclining in a bathtub holding a cup to her chest, the very room from which she would tragically meet her demise, her vulnerable form symbolizing the innocence stripped away by the cruelty of her assailant. It stands as an enduring testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the unwavering pursuit of justice in the face of unspeakable tragedy.
